The role of Jennifer Connelly has been set in the original film

We’re talking about spoilers Top Gun: Maverick Below, you are on the highway to the spoiler area! It’s been more than three decades since the original Top Gun was released in theaters and now the much-awaited sequel is officially here. As fans of the first movie will likely remember, it concludes with Tom Cruise reuniting Pete “Maverick” Mitchell with Charlie Kelly McGillis, presumably to set off at sunset on his motorbike. When Top Gun: Maverick begins though, Charlie is nowhere to be seen and isn’t even mentioned. As the film continues though, he soon finds a new love interest in Jennifer Connelly’s Penelope “Penny” Benjamin, and there’s some history tacit in their slander.

Fans of the original Top Gun might remember the choppy line of dialogue, which is largely there to paint a picture of Maverick’s semi-reckless behavior but also to confirm that, yes, he gets all the ladies. That line when Stinger said to Maverick: “Son, ego writes checks whose body can’t cash. You’ve been busted, you’ve lost your qualifications as division commander three times, you’ve been hacked twice by me, with a high speed history passing over five air traffic control towers and the daughter of an Admiral !” prompts this question from Goose, “Penny Benjamin?” Later buzz about it occurred during the “Great Balls of Fire” scene, revealing how Maverick slipped it into a jet plane and “turned it into a ballistic missile.” So yeah, a pair of punch lines in the original Top Gun turns out to be a major plot point for Top Gun: Maverick.

Throughout the film, the two characters tease their pasts, including many ups and downs that have surfaced over the years. Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood ReporterConnelly teased the relationship again, again changing what the movie alludes to, saying, “I think they’ve had a few ups and downs that didn’t do very well in the intervening years. We talked about their background and what the history might have been. I really enjoyed the way I wrote it.” She has Penny, but during the training process, there were definitely conversations about edits and revisions to the scenes. But the spirit of her character, from the first draft I read, was on a page.”

Top Gun: Maverick is currently playing in theaters around the world. As of this writing, Top Gun: Maverick Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 97% approval rating and over 230 reviews. The film’s critical consensus reads: “Top Gun: Maverick achieves a more complex feat than 4G upside-down diving, and delivers a late sequel that surpasses its predecessor in a very entertaining fashion.”
